University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s golf coach Jim DeMello is looking for consistency from his players this year and he’s gotten it through the first two tournaments of the fall season.
On Tuesday, the Vulcans finished runner-up in the Western Washington University Invitational in Bellingham, Wash. It matched last week’s second-place finish in the St. Martin’s Invitational.
NAIA powerhouse British Columbia University claimed the team title in both tournaments, with UHH playing consistent golf through each round.
BCU (304-310) carded a 614 total to beat the Vulcans (311-316) by 13 strokes. Western Washington (313-320) was third at 633, St. Martin’s (317-321) fourth at 638, and Victoria, B.C. (318-321) and Dixie State (323-316) tied for fifth.
BCU’s Stephanie Wong (71-76—147) and Kat Kennedy (73-75—148) finished atop the individual scoreboard.
Kristen Sawada (78-78) and Kacie Harada (78-78) tied for fifth place with three others at 156 to lead the Vulcans’ charge. UHH’s Jade Salvador (74-83) was 13th at 157 while teammates Dayna Bersamin (81-77—158) tied for 14th and Erika Morihiro (84-89—173) tied for 51st, respectively.
The Lady Vulcans next play in the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate Tournament, scheduled Oct. 28-29 at the Waikoloa Beach Golf Course.
The tournament field will include nine women’s teams and nine men’s teams.
